National Rankings

Public Accounting Report

One measure of our success is the ranking of our programs by the Public Accounting Report. Billed as “the independent newsletter of the accounting profession since 1978,” the PAR asks professors to rank programs on a 1 to 10 scale based on the single question, “Which programs consistently turn out students capable of someday attaining partner status?” And for the doctoral rankings, professors are asked to name the programs they most regard, in terms of teaching and research, for producing accounting professors. The result is a ranking that best reflects teaching quality amongst accounting departments at the national level. The most recent report ranked the department’s undergraduate program 13th overall and 8th among public universities, and it ranked the MS program 15th overall and 13th among public universities.

Brigham Young University Research Survey

In the peer-reviewed Issues in Accounting Education journal article, “Accounting Program Research Rankings by Topical Area and Methodology,” researchers at Brigham Young University examined publications in the top peer-reviewed accounting journals and ranked over accounting departments in over 400 higher education institutions over the last 6, 12, and 20 years. The department was ranked 4th, 3rd, and 3rd over those time periods.  More impressive is the fact that the managerial accounting group at MSU was ranked 1st, 1st, and 1st over those three time periods.

U.S. News & World Report
