Students from the Broad College of Business are doing something nice for people they don’t know and will never meet. They are doing it simply because they want to be kind and the world needs more kind people. It’s also the Spartan way.

Inspired by National Random Acts of Kindness Day, which is February 17, students from the Ernst & Young Communication Center and the Master’s in Accounting Student Activity Board will be leaving 100 thoughtful notes with a $1 bill attached at random places across campus.

“Showing kindness has several positive benefits. An act of kindness can increase happiness, health, and energy. Plus, kindness can trigger positive benefits in the recipient and others witnessing the act,” said Genevieve Risner, the director of the EY Communication Center.

Witnessing an act of kindness can increase oxytocin, which aids in lowering blood pressure and improving our overall heart-health, as reported on randomactsofkindness.org. Participating in an act of kindness can also reduce anxiety, and perpetually helpful people live longer with less stress in their lives, studies have shown.

“As business students, soon to be business professionals, it can be easy to get caught up in working to produce profits for a company while forgetting that the company’s shareholders aren’t the only stakeholders affected,” said Mariam Metti, the graduate assistant for the MS in Accounting and MS in Business Analytics programs.

“Giving back to the community is a rewarding experience, and this is giving our students an opportunity to do just that,” Metti said.

And make sure to look out for the EY Communication Center staff and MSA students, who will be wearing kindness buttons as a reminder that showing kindness is an act of Spartan Spirit.
